Loss of Libido – Most Common Sexual Disorder in Female

Lack of sex drive

Loss of Libido –

Sex can make you feel years younger, healthier, and happier and help maintain your relationships. But what happens when your partner suffers from a lack of sexual desire? How does it affect the relationship?

Sexual problems are widely seen in both men and women, while the most common sex related problems in men are erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, in women loss of sexual desire (loss of libido) is by far the most common.

Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder or Loss of libido in females is the most frustrating but also the most easily treatable of female sex problems.

The Loss of sexual desire in a woman can be frustrating not only for her partner but also for the woman herself.  This is so because in the majority of cases there is no clear cut reason for it.

Before, this problem was usually associated with women suffering  from menopause, but increasingly this condition is being seen in much younger women.

The reasons for loss of libido vary from person to person; here are few of these:

  • Dysperunia – Pain during intercourse: If a woman feels discomfort or pain consistently most times that she indulges in sex, she can start to lose interest in intercourse just to avoid the pain. This is easily fixed by using the proper lubrication and proper sex technique.
  • Anorgasmia – Inability to attain orgasm can lead to loss of libido. It can be due to inadequate skill of the partner. It can be treated by giving sex therapy.
  • Hormonal Changes: Women can start to have hormonal changes from their 40’s and these can lead to her losing sexual desire. Proper medication can take care of this.
  • Emotional Distress –  Loss of libido can also occur if the woman is under emotional stress. Her emotional state has a lot to do with her wanting to indulge in sexual activity. This can be fixed by decreasing the stress levels in her day to day life and improving the emotional aspect of her relationship through counselling and solving any unresolved relationship issues
  • Medications –  Many  medications including antidepressants, blood pressure medications and chemotherapy drugs are notorious libido killers. Antihistamines also can diminish female sex drive
  • Physical condition – If a woman is suffering from illness or is just plain fatigued after a long tiring day, she will definitely not be up for a romp between the sheets. Medication and proper rest can take care of this problem.
  • Malnutrition – Being very underweight or malnourished can cause a low libido due to disruptions in normal hormonal levels. Being obese also results in loss of libido.
  • Relationship issues – For many women, emotional closeness is an essential prelude to sexual intimacy. So problems in your relationship can be a major factor in low sex drive. Decreased interest in sex is often a result of ongoing issues, such as:
    • Lack of connection with your partner
    • Unresolved conflicts and or fights
    • Poor communication of sexual needs and preferences
    • Infidelity or breach of trust

Overall the important thing to realize about loss of libido is that one needs to first identify the reason for it and then seek professional help to solve this problem.

Communication and patience is required by both partners to be able to get their sex life back on track.

Talking with your doctor or a sex therapist will be the first step in the right direction to reclaiming your sex life.
